BELLAIRE, TX, USA, December 5, 2023 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Described as Mayberry on steroids, the “City of Bellaire”, TX, population ~17,000, is a 3.6 square mile oasis within the urban sprawl of the Houston Metropolitan Area. With 14 manicured parks, 2 swimming complexes and an abundance of other public amenities, the quality of life can justifiably be described as idyllic. Moreover, the devoted individuals who staff the Public Works, Police and Fire Departments, the City Clerk’s and City Manager’s offices are highly efficient.
Some have argued that Bellaire could operate on autopilot without politicans and, to a great extent, it does. Certainly, past voter turnouts in the off-year elections indicate a general complacency among the citizenry. That is, until this past November wherein there was ~30%+ increase in ballots cast. There has become a growing awareness that there are substantive, time-sensitive issues at stake. Specifically, in the past 2 years, the Council-Manager ship of state has sailed into the doldrums.
On the other hand, a full-time and well-qualified City Manager has finally been hired. There will be 3 of 7 new Council members to “breathe fresh air into Bellaire” and “restore trust in City Hall”. Those who have already been elected or re-elected have again pledged to act upon public input. The recent election’s final vote counts prove that recalls are a viable alternative.
There is one more election to be held, perhaps more critical than November’s. Two candidates remain in a runoff for Mayor. Aaron Perry, a former prosecutor, has focused on crime prevention as a primary issue. He also advocates lower taxes, improved infrastructure and park maintenance. Campaign finance reports indicate that he has received more donations (initially $50,000) than all other 8 mayoral and Council candidates combined. To date, Mr. Perry has been unavailable for further comments.
Gus Pappas, a former Council member earned a plurality in the November election with 41.94% of the vote versus 28.10% and 29.96% for his remaining opponent. Despite the moderate lead, Gus continues to knock on doors, solicit public comment and encourage all citizens to set another balloting record.
He served on City Council for 8 years and Mayor Pro Tem for 4 years. Gus represented citizens’ interests during Harvey, the May & Tax Day Floods, the 2021 Big Freeze and the approval and construction of 2 public schools, as well as the $27million City Hall, Civic Center, Police & Courts Complex. He has specific and comprehensive positions on the array of immediate issues facing Bellaire.
Both candidates have emphasized the importance of this week’s election. A single vote in this race will impact citizens'' daily lives much more than in any statewide of federal election.
